In brief

Amidst internal turmoil, China's nuclear arsenal and military forces are expanding, aimed at enhancing its global power and deterrence strategies.

China's military modernization remains on swift course despite corruption investigations shaking the leadership of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), as detailed in an annual Pentagon report released recently. According to the Defense Department, China’s navy has been evolving into a formidable global force, extending its operational reach well beyond East Asia. The report outlines China’s consideration of new missile technologies, including conventionally armed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), augmenting its already existing stockpile of approximately 135 nuclear long-range missiles. The Pentagon estimates that Beijing’s nuclear armament has swelled by around 100 warheads in the past year alone, increasing its total to over 600 by mid-2024. While this total remains significantly less than the arsenals of the United States and Russia, projections indicate that China could surpass 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030.In response to China’s growing military capabilities, the Biden administration is enhancing security alliances in the Asia-Pacific region, establishing military agreements that would facilitate the deployment of U.S. forces closer to Chinese shores and enable the launch of advanced anti-ship weaponry. The intensity of China’s nuclear armament has sparked discussions around prioritizing the strategic challenge posed by Beijing, even as the U.S. grapples with ongoing crises including the conflict in Ukraine.China’s increased militarization reflects a strategic imperative from its leadership under Xi Jinping, who is propelling a rapid expansion of the nation’s military hardware—reinforcing its position in any potential conflict involving the United States. This trajectory presents significant implications for the balance of power in the region and beyond.
