In brief

Pope Francis's passing has led to a highly-anticipated conclave scheduled for May 7, where 135 cardinals will gather to elect his successor in a process shrouded in secrecy.

On May 7, the Vatican will host a conclave in the iconic Sistine Chapel to elect the new pope, following the passing of Pope Francis, who died at 88 on Easter Monday. This significant gathering will bring together approximately 135 cardinals from around the globe, as they embark on the age-old tradition of selecting the Supreme Pontiff. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed that prior to the ballot, the eligible voting cardinals will attend a solemn mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. The conclave will commence with one round of voting on the first afternoon; however, subsequent votes will take place daily until a new pope is confirmed. To succeed, a candidate must secure a two-thirds majority of the votes, a task that could extend the voting process, especially if consensus remains elusive. Should the cardinals find themselves without a decision by the third day, they may take a day to pause and reflect in prayer. Outside the chapel, observers will closely monitor the smoke signals from the chimney. Black smoke indicates another voting round is imminent, while white smoke heralds the election of a new pope. Last Saturday, the Vatican witnessed a grand farewell for Pope Francis, drawing dignitaries, including world leaders and monarchs. The somber yet celebratory funeral saw 140,000 mourners lining the streets of Rome, as the Pope’s coffin made its final journey to Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica. Emotional scenes unfolded as hymns resonated amidst an air of reverence, culminating in the poignant image of a single white rose placed at his tomb, softly illuminated by a solitary spotlight. The transition period now places the Catholic Church globally on alert as the world awaits the new leadership.
