Zimbabwean football star Divine Lunga survived a gun attack in Johannesburg, South Africa, said local police.
Lunga, a 31‑year‑old striker for the Zimbabwe national team and South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, was driving with his younger brother in the inner‑city suburb of Hillbrow when an unknown gunman opened fire on their car.
Reports say the suspect, apparently mistaking Lunga for an undercover officer, fired several rounds. He escaped unharmed, leaving the vehicle unscathed.
South Africa’s crime challenges remain severe, with one of the world’s highest murder rates. Police spokesman Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed an investigation into an attempted murder. No arrests have yet been made.
The incident, which occurred just before the weekend’s match, raises concerns about athlete safety and the broader implications of violence on community life.
