Five people were injured in a shooting outside a residence hall at Virginia State University on Saturday, with one sustaining critical injuries.
Police responded to the incident at approximately 1:28 a.m. local time. Five victims were taken to local hospitals; four were considered not life‑threatening. Authorities have yet to confirm suspect arrests.
A temporary campus lockdown has been lifted, though a significant law‑enforcement presence remains to support ongoing investigations led by Chesterfield County Police, alongside local and campus police.
Virginia State University, home to about 5,000 students and situated roughly 20 miles south of Richmond, is one of the nation’s historically black colleges and universities—institutions originally established to provide higher education for African Americans who were otherwise excluded.
Classes for the new term were scheduled to begin on Monday, but the shooting has raised concerns over student safety and the integrity of campus life.
