WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump has spent much of his two-week vacation in Florida golfing. However, upon returning to the White House, he plans a major renovation project at Joint Base Andrews’ military golf course, a location he has never played before.

Known as the president's golf course, Andrews is a familiar retreat for commanders-in-chief, having hosted leaders such as Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, who frequently utilized its facilities. Trump had previously favored his family-owned courses, spending extensive time on the greens during his presidency.

Now, he has enlisted golf legend Jack Nicklaus to oversee the renovations to the course, aiming to modernize its facilities for both the presidency and the military community. Trump’s vision includes not just repairs but enhancements to make the course more enjoyable for servicemen and their families.

Michael Thomas, former general manager at Andrews, remarked on the necessity of this renovation during a time when many areas of the course showed signs of aging.

The underlying intentions of this project seem to be two-fold: improving the golfing experience at Andrews and reinforcing Trump’s personal connection to golf, which has been a significant aspect of his public persona.

Importantly, discussions are in the early stages regarding the scope of the renovations, with the White House stating that the cost and funding have yet to be determined. Trump has lightly noted that it would require very little money. However, some doubt remains about this claim considering the extent of the proposed upgrades.

Andrews has a storied history that predates its golfing capabilities, going back to its use during the Civil War, making it an establishment rich with tradition. The military golf course is not open to the public, primarily serving active and retired military members and their families, adding to the exclusivity of the recreational area.

As the project unfolds, it will join a list of Trump’s construction initiatives, which have included extensive renovations at the White House and various public sites. Understanding the significance of his golf course and its connection to presidential history, the renovations at Andrews will likely remain a focal point during his presidency.
