PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A tragic shooting at Brown University on Saturday afternoon left two people dead and nine others injured during what should have been a routine day of final exams. The incident unfolded in a classroom of the engineering building, prompting immediate action from law enforcement and creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty on campus.
Hundreds of police officers are currently conducting searches throughout the university and surrounding neighborhoods, while reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to track down the shooter. The suspect, depicted in the footage wearing black clothing and possibly a camouflage mask, was reported to have left the scene calmly, raising concerns about whether he is a student at the university.
University President Christina Paxson announced that ten of the injured individuals are believed to be students, with one person in critical condition requiring intensive medical care. The other wounded have received treatment at Rhode Island Hospital.
As the event unfolded, the normally vibrant campus fell silent. Students were advised to shelter in place, and many were evacuated to a nearby fitness center where they waited, some without jackets or belongings.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley encouraged nearby residents to remain indoors until the situation was resolved, stating, “The Brown community’s heart is breaking and Providence’s heart is breaking along with it.”
Interestingly, the shooting occurred during a time when engineering design exams were underway, further heightening the tension. Emma Ferraro, a chemical engineering student, described her experience of fleeing the lobby upon hearing gunshots and seeking refuge in another building.
The incident has shaken the community, with students expressing shock and fear. Eva Erickson, a doctoral candidate and former 'Survivor' contestant, narrowly escaped the ordeal by exiting her lab just minutes before the gunfire erupted.
As investigations continue, the task of securing the campus and capturing the shooter remains a high priority for local authorities, who are mobilizing all available resources to address this tragic event.
