SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor on Sunday following sexual assault allegations that he has vehemently denied. Swalwell emphasized in a social media post, 'I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.' His decision follows a significant shift in political support after reports emerged over the weekend that accused him of sexually assaulting a woman when she worked for him.

As the allegations surfaced from a San Francisco Chronicle article, Swalwell’s support rapidly waned among fellow Democrats, many of whom urged him to withdraw from the race. The accusations have raised concerns that the crowded field of candidates could lead to a lack of representation for the party in the upcoming general election, which may severely affect the outcomes for the primary scheduled for June 2.

On social media, Swalwell expressed his regrets about preceding judgments stating, To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. His peers in Congress have joined calls for his resignation, indicating rising political pressure on Swalwell amidst a climate of accountability.

Although Swalwell maintains his innocence, the reported incidents, including another alleged assault occurring in New York in 2024, have prompted varying responses from colleagues. Some representatives have threatened to push for expulsion from Congress should he refuse to resign, which adds to the already tumultuous political scenario.

The San Francisco Chronicle implicated Swalwell in accusations that date back to 2019, detailing two instances of alleged misconduct where the woman claimed her ability to consent was compromised due to intoxication. As pressure builds, Swalwell’s rivals in the gubernatorial race are quick to capitalize, attempting to attract his supporters to their camps such as billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer and former Rep. Katie Porter.

Moving forward, the implications of these severe allegations on Swalwell’s political future remain uncertain as the case develops and political dynamics evolve in California.
