NASHUA, N.H. — On Monday, a natural gas leak sparked an explosion at the Greater Nashua Mental Health facility, leading to injuries amongst first responders while all occupants managed to evacuate safely. Firefighters were investigating the reported odor of gas when the explosion occurred, causing a partial collapse of the building. According to State Fire Marshall Sean Toomey, three firefighters were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident heightened community alerts, prompting advisories for nearby businesses and homes to extinguish any flames and prepare for potential evacuations. Jesci Larochelle, a nearby resident, described feeling her home shake as the loud blast shook the vicinity. Multiple fire units arrived on the scene where aerial footage depicted flames and thick smoke rising from the rubble. Nashua officials, including Governor Kelly Ayotte, expressed gratitude to the fire crews for their quick response amid challenging winter conditions, emphasizing the importance of safety measures as similar incidents have occurred in the region before. The situations around gas leaks remain under scrutiny, particularly as community safety is prioritized in hazardous weather.
