In brief
Amid ongoing tensions with their agency Ador, NewJeans have announced their departure while alleging significant concerns regarding their treatment and working conditions.
In a press conference held late Thursday, the five-member group, NewJeans, revealed their split from Ador, a subsidiary of the Hybe entertainment powerhouse. This decision comes after allegations of mistreatment and manipulation were raised by group members, particularly Hanni, who emphasized their feeling of being shunned and disrespected by the agency. Hanni disclosed the toll this toxic work environment took on the group and its staff, stating, "This is not the type of work ethic we respect and not one we want to be a part of." The singers have expressed a desire to work with former producer Min Hee-Jin, who left Ador amid rumors of plans to take NewJeans with her, eventually seeking independence from Hybe. The ongoing conflict has drawn attention in South Korea, with previous allegations from Min against Hybe for attempting to replicate NewJeans's music and branding through another girl group known as Illit. NewJeans has taken action, filing a legal notice demanding that Ador address breaches in their exclusive contracts. If unresolved within 14 days, they intend to terminate their agreements, despite potential financial consequences.Amid these developments, the group reiterated their commitment to fulfilling contractual obligations but warned fans that the use of their name may become complicated after the termination. The group previously entered into a seven-year contract expected to run until 2029, incurring a possible fee of approximately 300 billion South Korean Won (around £170 million) if they opted for early termination.Haerin firmly opposed the notion of a breach fee, claiming that NewJeans had adhered to all regulations. "We did nothing but try our best - they are the ones at fault," she expressed, placing the blame on Hybe and Ador. In response, Ador maintains that it has adhered to the contract's terms, urging collaboration with NewJeans for upcoming activities. They expressed hope for meetings to address the mounting issues, emphasizing the necessity of open dialogue. This series of confrontations marks a tumultuous period for the K-Pop band, already amidst scrutiny for the allegations made at a recent National Assembly hearing on workplace harassment. Hanni provided emotional testimony, alleging that the company purposefully suppressed their voices within the industry. Since their debut in 2022, NewJeans has quickly risen to prominence, achieving impressive commercial success alongside legendary groups like BTS. With popular hits like "Super Shy" and "OMG," the group has carved out a significant space for itself, garnering fan attention and industry accolades, including a Best Group nomination at this year’s MTV Awards. Now, they must navigate a precarious path forward amid uncertainties with their agency and the future of their brand.
