In brief

As violence escalates in Syria with over 1,000 reported deaths amidst clashes, interim President Ahmed al-Shara appeals for national unity and civil peace, stressing the importance of overcoming deep-seated sectarian divisions in the aftermath of civil war.

Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Shara, addressed the nation on Sunday, calling for calm and unity as violent clashes persist in the coastal provinces. According to reports from war monitoring groups, more than 1,000 individuals have been killed, including a significant number of civilians, amidst escalating violence linked to the new government’s efforts to assert control. In a video message shared widely online, al-Shara spoke from a mosque in Damascus, emphasizing the need for “national unity and civil peace.” He reassured citizens that the country possesses the fundamentals needed for survival amidst ongoing conflict. The fighting flared last week between government forces loyal to al-Shara and supporters of the ousted regime led by Bashar al-Assad, resulting in civilian casualties as the clashes intensified.Reports indicate that fresh confrontations occurred in the Latakia and Tartus provinces, regions heavily populated by the Alawite community, which formed the backbone of the Assad regime. Concerns about potential renewed sectarian violence are on the rise as the intergovernmental struggle unfolds. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, government forces have utilized drones, tanks, and artillery in their offensive operations.Tragically, the monitoring group detailed that over 1,000 lives have been lost since fighting erupted, including approximately 700 civilians, with allegations of indiscriminate violence by government forces. The Syrian Network for Human Rights corroborated that approximately 125 civilians were killed by security forces recently, reflecting the grim reality in which men of all ages have been tragically caught in the crossfire. This surge in violence represents the most severe test faced by the new government since it took power following the ousting of the Assad regime in early December. The ongoing conflict underscores the deep-seated sectarian divides that have fragmented Syrian society following years of civil upheaval, challenging al-Shara’s leadership and call for national healing.
