A US Governor took home $1.4 million (£1 million) in a gambling windfall last year as revealed by a recent tax filing.

JB Pritzker, who was in Las Vegas with his wife and friends, reportedly won the amount playing blackjack.

The two-term Democrat, with a net worth of $3.9 billion (£2.9 billion) attributed to his Hyatt Hotel inheritance, stated through a campaign spokesperson that he plans to donate the winnings to charity, though he did not clarify why he has not done so yet.

At a news conference, Pritzker mentioned feeling incredibly lucky and acknowledged the odds, humorously suggesting that it's rare to end up ahead at a casino.

He previously founded the Chicago Poker Challenge, which he claims has raised millions for the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

In 2024, Pritzker and his wife reported a total income of $10.6 million (£7.8 million), largely from dividends and capital gains, paying around $1.6 million (£1.1 million) in taxes on a taxable income of $5.87 million (£4.36 million).

Referring to his winnings as a net number over his trip, Pritzker did not disclose details of his winning hand but shared that he left the casino before potentially losing what he had won.

Pritzker, a vocal critic of President Trump, has also faced scrutiny for his governance, especially regarding federal law enforcement actions in Chicago. With intentions to seek a third term in 2026, he remains focused on his current gubernatorial role despite political turbulence.
