The Big Island of Hawaii finds itself on the brink of its first direct hurricane strike since 1992, as Tropical Cyclone Lala has now reached Category 1 status. Wind speeds of 75 mph (120 km/h) precede a potential surge of up to 25 inches (63 cm) of rain and a 3‑foot storm surge. Government officials have issued warnings to residents, demanding urgent preparations for flooding and mudslides that could threaten lives and infrastructure.
A hurricane warning currently covers the Big Island while Maui County, Oahu, Kauai and Niihau remain under tropical‑storm warnings.
