NEW YORK (AP) — After years of #MeToo infamy, legal challenges, and imprisonment, Harvey Weinstein is set to face trial once more in New York City over a rape accusation. Jury selection is expected to commence soon as the former movie mogul heads into what is now his third trial.
This trial focuses on a singular charge concerning hairstylist and actress Jessica Mann, who alleges that Weinstein raped her in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013. Unlike previous trials that saw a host of accusations against him, this case will centralize on Mann's allegations solely.
Weinstein’s new legal team, led by attorney Marc Agnifilo, asserts that they plan to take a different approach. Agnifilo has indicated that the trial won't mirror past proceedings, suggesting a strategic pivot in how evidence is presented, particularly concerning the relationship between Weinstein and Mann.
In his past courtroom appearances, Weinstein has steadfastly denied all allegations, claiming that although he acted inappropriately, he never assaulted anyone. This trial comes after a series of highly publicized legal battles following allegations of sexual misconduct that catalyzed the #MeToo movement in 2017.
Weinstein, once an influential figure in Hollywood with a string of successful films, has seen his reputation shattered as multiple sexual assault allegations led to criminal charges and convictions. He faced trials in New York and Los Angeles, leading to a conviction on some charges but also a mix of acquittals.
Mann has previously testified about her tumultuous relationship with Weinstein and described how she felt pressured into several encounters despite her protestations. In court, she recounted feeling trapped in his hotel room during one specific incident, highlighting the power dynamics at play.
Looking to the future, Weinstein faces the possibility of a lengthy incarceration if convicted again. Although this specific rape charge carries a lesser penalty compared to his previous convictions, it underscores the relentless nature of his legal troubles and the ongoing impact of the accusations against him.
