Ghana Loses Its Tallest Man, A Symbol of Community Resilience

The 33‑year‑old Sulemana Abdul Samed, known locally as Awuche – meaning “Let’s go” in Hausa – died early Monday in Tamale, where he had been admitted for infected leg sores.


In 2023 the BBC measured him at 7 ft 4 in (223 cm) and it was then that his height earned him local celebrity status across northern Ghana.


He was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a genetic condition that causes excessive growth of connective tissues. Despite the physical challenges, relatives describe him as generous, kind and always optimistic. A benefactor, Ibrahim Mahama – the brother of former president John Mahama – had stepped in to cover his medical costs, yet the infection on his legs proved fatal.


His family will bury him in Tamale instead of his hometown of Gambaga to avoid overwhelming crowds, and communities across the region have expressed deep sorrow at his sudden loss.


This death underscores the need for stronger health infrastructure and support for people suffering from rare conditions in developing countries.
