WASHINGTON (AP) — George Conway, a former conservative lawyer who has emerged as one of President Donald Trump’s staunchest critics, has taken steps toward entering the race for Congress in an open seat in New York City. Conway filed the required paperwork on Monday to run as a Democrat in New York’s 12th Congressional District. Although he has not yet made an official announcement, his campaign did not respond to inquiries regarding this development. Should he officially join the race, Conway would add his name to a growing list of high-profile candidates competing in the primary following the retirement of Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler.

Initially a supporter of Trump during the earlier phases of his presidency, Conway was married to pollster and strategist Kellyanne Conway, who served as a senior advisor in the White House. Over time, however, he became one of the president’s most vocal opponents, using social media and television to condemn Trump’s actions with intensity that often paralleled his wife’s public defenses.

Conway is also a co-founder of the Lincoln Project, an organization that has actively campaigned against Trumpism. The couple announced their divorce in early 2023. Meanwhile, the race to fill Nadler's seat continues to heat up, with Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of John F. Kennedy, and Micah Lasher, a former aide to Nadler, also declaring their candidacies. The 12th District encompasses areas from Union Square to the northern edge of Central Park, attracting candidates from the affluent Upper East Side and Upper West Side.
