In brief

Concerns over stability prompt the Jordanian government to take decisive steps against the Muslim Brotherhood, reinforcing previous actions aimed at disbanding the group.

Jordan's Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday a sweeping ban on the activities of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization previously prohibited in several Arab states. This action follows a recent security operation in which 16 individuals were arrested for allegedly plotting national security threats involving weapons, explosives, and plans for drone manufacturing.During a press briefing, Interior Minister Mazin Al Farrayeh indicated a direct connection between these security threats and the Muslim Brotherhood, asserting that "elements of the Muslim Brotherhood" had acted covertly to undermine national stability and threaten security. Authorities have reported the discovery of explosives and weapons related to these plots. On the night of the arrests, the Muslim Brotherhood reportedly attempted to conceal numerous documents pertinent to their operations.Jordan has been incrementally disbanding the Muslim Brotherhood since a 2020 court ruling and has previously shut down the group's headquarters in Amman in 2016. However, the implications of this latest ban on the Islamic Action Front, the political wing of the Brotherhood, remain uncertain. Despite these challenges, the Front secured 31 of 138 parliamentary seats in the latest elections, positioning itself as a vocal opponent of the Israeli invasion of Gaza within its campaign platform. The Jordanian government's robust measures indicate growing concerns regarding internal security and the influence of Islamist groups within the region, highlighting the delicate balance Jordan seeks in maintaining national unity and addressing public safety.
