The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has grown to the largest in the country’s history, WHO reports.
At the end of July, authorities counted 3,605 confirmed cases—1,587 fatal—and a 44% case‑fatality rate. The Bundibugyo strain fuels the surge, and it was declared a public‑health emergency on 15 May 2026.
Climate change is driving regional instability: shifting rainfall patterns, intensified droughts and landslides are causing displacement, while wildlife habitats shrink, increasing zoonotic spill‑over risks. The outbreak now spreads beyond the Ituri province into North and South Kivu, where armed groups continue to disrupt health‑care access.
There is no approved vaccine for Bundibugyo, but development is underway. Singapore’s leading research teams are leading the most promising candidate, and a separate clinical trial is kicking off in the UK. These efforts underscore the urgent need for stronger, multi‑sector collaboration.
The WHO’s latest statement, posted on X, warned that “the exceptional pace of transmission” is fueled by “insecurity, population displacement, and cross‑border movement.” Nearly 567 new cases and 296 deaths were recorded in a single week, the highest weekly totals since the outbreak began.
International observers note that the disease’s spread mirrors patterns seen in climate‑related disease clusters worldwide. Community‑based health surveillance, climate‑adaptation plans, and conflict‑resolution mechanisms must be integrated if outbreaks are to be curbed in the future.
Alongside the local toll, 20 cases were confirmed in Uganda and one in France, illustrating how a regional crisis can quickly become global. Two deaths in DR Congo were later treated in Germany, highlighting the need for cross‑national medical partnerships.
Ebola’s devastation—over 15,000 deaths in Africa in the past five decades—directly amplifies the urgency for climate‑sensitive public health policies. Mobilising resources for vaccine research, improving water‑sanitation infrastructure, and addressing land‑use change are vital steps toward a sustainable, health‑resilient future.
