SANTA ANA, Calif. — A significant crackdown on the Mexican Mafia resulted in the arrests of over two dozen individuals in Southern California on Thursday morning. The operation was spearheaded by the FBI alongside federal and local law enforcement agencies.

Search and arrest warrants were executed at approximately 30 locations, primarily in Orange County. Overall, 43 people, including those already incarcerated, have been indicted on a variety of charges, encompassing murder, kidnapping, extortion, illegal gambling operations, and drug trafficking.

Authorities reported the seizure of an alarming 120 pounds (over 54 kilograms) of methamphetamine, more than eight pounds (about four kilograms) of fentanyl, 25 firearms, and over $30,000 in cash. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli highlighted the dangers posed by the drugs and the criminal organization, stating, 'The stuff that we’re taking off the streets is very, very dangerous. These guys have no regard for human life. They’re about making money.'

The Mexican Mafia, which originated in juvenile detention facilities during the 1950s, has evolved into a formidable international criminal enterprise, overseeing drug sales, smuggling operations, and extortion efforts both within California's prison system and on the streets.

Prosecutors elaborated that one incarcerated leader directed gang activities from prison using contraband cellphones between June 2024 and April 2026. He allegedly guided street gang members in kidnapping and violent assaults.

Additionally, the indictment links the gang to drug deals involving fentanyl, meth, heroin, and cocaine, revealing a complex network of crime that extends to illegal gambling operations.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the gang operated illegal gambling businesses from commercial locations and residences, exacting extortion fees and ensuring protection through violence.

A murder at a gang-controlled motel in Anaheim is also under investigation. The arrested individuals are scheduled for initial court appearances in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
