Court Convicts Former Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal for Rape

An Indian court has overturned a 2021 acquittal and found former Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal guilty of raping a former colleague in an incident that occurred in November 2013.

The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court convicted Tejpal under sections of the Indian Penal Code that cover rape and sexual harassment. The judge declared that the evidence proved the allegations that the accused assaulted the victim in an elevator during a Tehelka event in Goa.

Tejpal, who has consistently denied the accusations, will be sentenced later that Thursday. He was previously granted bail by the Supreme Court after spending seven months in jail, and the earlier trial court in 2021 had dismissed all charges. The government had appealed the 2021 judgment and the High Court’s conviction confirms the higher judiciary’s willingness to reassess prior outcomes.

The court received a strong plea from the government’s Solicitor General Tushar Mehta urging a maximum sentence, emphasizing that a clear message must be sent to society that a woman’s “no” is definitive. Tejpal, while acknowledging his 62‑year‑old status and family background, expressed a desire to appeal on behalf of “political victim” status and requested leniency from the court.

The verdict highlights the broader debate on sexual violence cases in India and the legal system’s evolving stance toward accountability and victim protection.
