On 3 September 2026 the U.S. Mint rolled out a commemorative $1 coin featuring former President Donald Trump’s likeness, marking the country’s 250th‑anniversary celebrations. The coin, priced at $61 for a roll of 25, was made available for sale at the Mint’s Washington D.C. store and in vending machines – although it is not intended for everyday circulation.

U.S. law forbids living presidents from appearing on currency, but a special design clause tied to the celebration overrode that rule. The coin’s composition is 88.5 % copper with a zinc‑nickel‑manganese brass outer layer, giving it a gold‑tinted look without containing real gold.

The minting operation involves copper mining, which carries environmental footprints such as water use and habitat disturbance. While the coin was marketed as a collector’s item, its production highlights the need for transparent, sustainable practices in the metals industry.

Treasury officials previously hinted at a $250 bill bearing Trump’s image, signalling a wider shift toward incorporating the former president’s portraits in U.S. currency. Meanwhile, businesses remain free to decide whether to accept these commemorative coins as legal tender.
