China has successfully landed a reusable rocket for the first time, a breakthrough that could reshape the economics of satellite launch and spur climate‑focused space missions.
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation announced that the Long March 10B lifted off from Hainan at 12:15 local time (04:15 GMT) on Friday. Within six minutes after separating from the upper stage, its booster returned to Earth vertically and was recovered on a floating platform, completing a controlled descent and splash‑down.
This event signals that China may be able to match or challenge U.S. dominance in reusable rocket technology, following SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Blue Origin’s New Glenn. By reusing boosters—typically the most valuable part of a launch vehicle—launch costs can be dramatically reduced, enabling more affordable satellite deployment for climate monitoring, Earth observation, and other environmental applications.
Prior attempts by China include the Long March 10A in February, which also showcased a controlled descent and near‑shore recovery. The Long March 10B can carry at least 16 metric tons to low‑Earth orbit and bears a striking resemblance to Falcon 9. However, unlike Falcon 9, the Long March 10B uses “landing hooks” that catch a net attached to a reef‑like floating platform rather than an autonomous ground or drone‑ship touchdown.
Market reaction was immediate: shares in Chinese space firms rose by the daily limit, with China Spacesat and China Satellite Communications each gaining 10%. The achievement underscores China’s growing capabilities in sustainable spaceflight and highlights the broader global shift toward greener, reusable launch systems that will support climate science and environmental sustainability missions.
