Barbed‑Wire Guardian: Palestinian School Shields Pupils from Rising Settler Aggression

In the north‑eastern outskirts of Ramallah, the village of al‑Mughayyir now finds its primary school completely surrounded by a barbed‑wire fence. Parents say the new perimeter was erected after a series of violent incidents by Israeli settlers and frequent closures by Israeli military checkpoints.

Reports show that this year eleven Palestinians — six adults and five children — have been killed in the area of al‑Mughayyir. One of the victims, 14‑year‑old Aws al‑Naasan, was shot outside the school gates in April. The school’s sudden fortification signals an increasing sense of threat felt by families who had earlier taken the students to nearby schools near Ramallah.

Both the United Nations and the International Court of Justice declare all Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal, citing violations of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Many of the droves of “settler outposts” that have sprung up around al‑Mughayyir are also illegal under Israeli law, a fact that has not, however, stopped the assault on local residents.

The barbed‑wire fence is a stark reminder that the safety of children and their right to education are under threat, a reality that many see as a violation of basic human rights. Citizens’ groups and international NGOs call for an immediate cessation of violence and a comprehensive strategy to secure schools in conflict zones.
