In brief
Unidentified white blobs have baffled beachgoers in Newfoundland, prompting an investigation by Canadian authorities. Described as doughy with an odor reminiscent of vegetable oil, these mysterious masses began appearing around early September on beaches along Placentia Bay's southeast coast. Residents and online communities have speculated on their nature, with theories ranging from fungus to ambergris.
Stan Tobin, a local environmental advocate, first noticed the blobs, thinking they resembled Styrofoam. Hundreds of these blobs, about 6 inches in diameter, have since washed up, but their origin remains unknown. Authorities, including Environment and Climate Change Canada, have confirmed the substance is not petrochemical or biologically based, yet its true source remains elusive. Tobin urges transparency, believing someone knows the true origin and method of arrival. As investigations continue, the mystery poses questions about pollution and environmental impact.
