In brief
A powerful earthquake in Myanmar led to a tragic building collapse in Bangkok, claiming at least eight lives and leaving many workers unaccounted for. Rescue operations are ongoing, with signs of life sparking hope among families.
In Bangkok, rescue workers are engaged in an arduous search for survivors following the catastrophic collapse of a high-rise building linked to a powerful earthquake that originated in Myanmar. With temperatures soaring to nearly 96 degrees Fahrenheit, the rubble, towering almost seven stories high, poses a formidable challenge for the crews striving to uncover signs of life among the debris. The incident took place at the construction site of a 33-story structure near Chatuchak Park, which had been actively under development for the Thai government. Currently, eight fatalities have been confirmed at the scene, yet dozens of individuals remain missing, primarily construction workers buried beneath the rubble. According to Suriyachai Rawiwan, head of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, there were initial indications of life detected, suggesting that at least 15 individuals may still be alive, trapped under as much as 10 feet of rubble.Hope continues to flicker, albeit with the harsh reminder that nearly a full day has passed without further updates on any potential rescues. Onlookers have gathered, filled with anxiety and eagerness to learn of their loved ones, many of whom were part of the 320-strong workforce on the site at the time of the disaster.Among the hopeful relatives is Than Htike, a 42-year-old construction worker who narrowly escaped the collapse. Tragically, his wife remains unaccounted for, trapped while working on an elevator shaft. He recounted the chilling moments of the incident, saying, “The building came down so fast.” Natthanan Kaewkaiyasit, also anxiously waiting for news, expressed her determination to remain at the site despite the bleak circumstances. Her partner, a welder, is one of the many missing. Aubonrat Setnawet, who was present during the earthquake, described her terrifying experience as the structure began to sway before it ultimately crumbled. These personal stories underscore the urgent plight of migrant workers from Myanmar, who often endure economic hardship, compelling them to seek work across borders. As the rescue efforts persist amid challenging conditions, families are clinging to hope for the safe return of their loved ones.
