In brief
For ten years, Kenya's only L.G.B.T.Q. church has encountered relentless oppression, relocating repeatedly but ultimately finding a hidden sanctuary where individuals can openly embrace their identities and faith together.
For nearly a decade, a unique church in Nairobi, Kenya, has endured persistent challenges as the sole congregation led by and for L.G.B.T.Q. individuals. Over the past ten years, the church has been displaced from ten different locations due to vandalism, police interventions, and violent confrontations with hostile locals.Recently, after enduring this fight for survival, the church has found a new secret location. On a quiet Sunday afternoon, beneath the scrutiny of church members who vet attendees at the entrance, nearly 100 worshipers gather to find solace and acceptance. The heartfelt sermons resonate deeply, offering a message of hope and belonging amid the struggles they face outside these walls. For many congregants, this space is a vital sanctuary after fleeing from countries where L.G.B.T.Q. identities can attract lethal threats. Each service represents a profound opportunity to worship freely, blending their spiritual beliefs with their gender and sexual identities. The congregation, which typically ranges from 50 to 200 worshipers each week, embraces their faith in an environment where discrimination and violence are alarmingly prevalent. As the pastor passionately reminds them, "Family may kick you out, and the church you once attended could not understand that kind of expression, demonizing your life." But within these hidden walls, a new family is forged - one united by mutual understanding and love, where every voice is celebrated, and their existence is affirmed with sacred conviction.
