In brief
In a disheartening incident on Monday night, UN aid trucks en route to el-Fasher in North Darfur came under attack, resulting in "multiple casualties," as confirmed by a spokesperson from the United Nations. The convoy, which included trucks from the World Food Programme, was reportedly targeted in the town of el-Koma—an area currently controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group embroiled in a brutal civil war against the Sudanese army.
The Sudanese government accused the RSF of orchestrating the assault, resulting in deaths among guards, drivers, and civilians. The RSF, however, countered, attributing the attack to the army. The convoy was attacked while it awaited departure for el-Fasher, a city grappling with severe famine conditions and the last significant locale in North Darfur under army control. As the RSF has maintained a year-long offensive against military personnel and civilians there, the situation remains desperate. Reports indicate that four members of the UN convoy were killed Monday night, with two additional injuries reported. Local volunteer group, el-Koma Emergency Room, posted a chilling video on social media featuring a torched truck laden with supplies and implicated "Sudanese army drones" in the attack. El-Koma has been a frequent scene of both army and RSF aggression, leading to numerous civilian casualties and significant damage to critical infrastructure. Over the weekend, airstrikes attributed to the Sudanese army reportedly killed or injured at least 89 individuals during an attack on a bustling market in el-Koma; the army has yet to respond to these claims. This ongoing civil war, now more than two years in duration, has birthed one of the worst humanitarian crises globally, with over four million people forced to flee their homes since the conflict began in 2023. The war erupted following a failed power struggle between the army and the RSF, who initially collaborated to stage a coup against Sudan's democratic transition before diverging into violent conflict.
