In brief

World-renowned tennis player Iga Swiatek, currently ranked second and a five-time Grand Slam title holder, has recently faced a one-month suspension after testing positive for trimetazidine (TMZ), a heart medication. This result came from an out-of-competition sample taken in August 2024, while she was championing the tennis world as the top-ranked player. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed that Swiatek's case involved a contaminated medicine, resulting in a verdict that she was not significantly at fault. Consequently, she agreed to the imposed one-month suspension on Wednesday.

Swiatek, 23, who held her provisional suspension starting September 12, had also successfully contested this provisional ruling, missing out on three big tournaments. The ITIA's investigation revealed that the source of the drug was a medication manufactured in Poland, where it is regulated, yet it lacks the same classification globally. Despite the circumstances, there remains a strict standard for doping in professional sports. Following her suspension appeal on September 22, the ITIA acknowledged the remarkable factors at play in this case, positioning Swiatek at the lowest end of the fault scale. Swiatek will be eligible to return to competition on December 4, 2024, after forfeiting prize money from the Cincinnati Open semi-finals, which followed her positive test. ITIA chief executive Karen Moorhouse underscored the rarity of such contaminated product cases, highlighting Swiatek's unintentional violation. The tennis community remains watchful as further developments unfold.
