Belgian Prince's Social Security Claim Dismissed Amid Controversy
A Belgian court has denied Prince Laurent's request for social security benefits on top of his royal allowance of £300k.
In a recent court ruling, Belgium's Prince Laurent was denied eligibility for social security benefits despite receiving a substantial state-funded royal allowance of approximately €388,000 (£295,850). The prince, aged 61, argued that his royal engagements and his work leading an animal welfare charity warranted the additional support, citing a personal principle rather than financial necessity.
The court in Brussels disagreed, affirming that Laurent could not be classified as self-employed or as an employee, leading to the rejection of his claim. While the judge acknowledged that Laurent might qualify for a pension, existing legislative gaps prevent this from happening and called for necessary reforms. Laurent's attorney, Olivier Rijckaert, defended the prince's pursuit of these benefits as emblematic of Belgian law, which grants social security rights to all residents, from the poorest to the wealthiest.
Despite receiving around €5,000 (£4,300) monthly after expenses like staff salaries and travel are accounted for, the prince is without access to social security benefits such as medical reimbursements. He expressed concern for his family’s financial future after the allowance ceases with his death.
This legal battle follows a history of controversy for Laurent, who is known as the “cursed prince.” The Belgian government once suspended part of his royal allowance after he attended a diplomatic event without prior approval. Additionally, he has faced public scrutiny for past offenses, including speeding violations and meetings with controversial leaders during politically sensitive periods. The prince and his legal team are still considering whether to appeal the court’s verdict.
