On Tuesday, thousands of residents were expected to return, relieved at the good news that flooding levels had not reached earlier predictions. In Townsville, which has endured severe weather, residents woke to manageable drizzle rather than intense downpours, a significant shift from the past few days' chaos. Premier Crisafulli expressed optimism, insisting they may have "dodged a bullet," with earlier forecasts warning that up to 1,700 homes were threatened.
However, the scenario is different further north in towns like Ingham and Cardwell. Poor communication and damaged infrastructure hinder assessments of the destruction. Crisafulli remarked, "The more information that comes through, the more it appears there is real devastation," revealing his personal connection to Ingham and the unprecedented flooding of local businesses.
