A devastating air force jet crash unfolded recently at Milestone School and College in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where a Year 10 student, Farhan Hasan, witnessed the incident take place shortly after his examination. As he left his classroom, a Bangladeshi Air Force F-7 training jet experienced a mechanical failure, careening into the school campus and claiming the lives of at least 20 individuals, including the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam.
Farhan described the horrific scene, saying, "The burning plane was hitting the building right in front of my eyes," and revealed that his best friend—who had sat alongside him during the exam—did not survive the impact. The chaotic situation was compounded by parents who had also gathered at the school to pick up their children, many of whom were among the casualties.
Eyewitness accounts detailed the explosion and subsequent smoke rising from the site. Rezaul Islam, a teacher at the school, remarked on witnessing the plane hit the structure directly, while another educator, Masud Tarik, recounted the panic and explosions.
In the aftermath of the disaster, a large crowd gathered at the crash site, with ambulances rushing to transport over 170 injured individuals to nearby hospitals. The National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery reported that more than 50 victims, primarily minors aged 9 to 14, suffered from burn injuries and were in critical condition.
Family members flooded hospitals searching for news of loved ones, with reports of numerous people donating blood to assist the injured. As a mark of respect, the interim government declared a nationwide mourning day, with flags to be flown at half-mast.
The investigation into the crash is underway, as officials assert that the pilot attempted to divert the plane to a less populated area prior to the tragedy. Muhammad Yunus, leader of Bangladesh's interim government, expressed his sorrow for the nation and reiterated the commitment to investigate the incident thoroughly and provide assistance to the affected families.
