Former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy has been shot dead in Lviv, Ukrainian authorities have reported.

Police received news of the shooting in the Frankivsk district of Lviv at around midday local time on Saturday, though it remains unclear whether the shooter has been apprehended.

Parubiy, 54, gained prominence during Ukraine's Maidan movement in 2014, which advocated for closer ties with the European Union (EU) and resulted in the ousting of pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called it a 'terrible murder' and extended condolences to Parubiy's family.

The motives behind the attack are still unclear, with preliminary reports suggesting Parubiy was shot multiple times by a gunman on an e-bike disguised as a courier. Investigations are currently being conducted by Ukraine's national police, Lviv Regional police, and the security service.

Zelensky addressed the nation via a Telegram message stating, 'All necessary forces and means are being deployed to investigate and find the killer.' This tragic event raises significant concerns regarding the safety of political figures in Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict.
