In a grim series of events, a body was recovered near Tathra in southern New South Wales, following the drowning of a 58-year-old fisherman and two others in separate incidents that occurred shortly prior. As search and rescue efforts continue, crews are seeking a man who was swept into the water near Sydney. Meanwhile, a woman drowned, and a man remains missing after their group was overwhelmed by waves in San Remo, Victoria.
Victoria's Premier Jacinta Allan expressed her condolences, referring to the tragic incidents that mark a disturbing beginning to the holiday period. "My thoughts are with the family of someone who has lost their life in such tragic circumstances, and potentially there is more difficult news to come," she stated.
Surf Life Saving Australia chief Adam Weir emphasized the importance of safety at coastal locations, urging holidaymakers to utilize patrolled beaches. Statistics reveal a shocking 630 drownings in unpatrolled waters over the past decade.
