An entire family - a married couple and their two young sons - have been killed in an overnight Russian drone attack in Ukraine's north-eastern Sumy region, local officials have said.
Regional head Oleh Hryhorov reported that a residential building in the village of Chernechchyna was targeted. Tragically, the bodies of a six-year-old boy, four-year-old brother, and their parents were discovered among the rubble.
Ukraine's air force claimed it shot down 46 out of 65 attacking Russian drones across the country, yet 19 direct hits were recorded in six different locations.
The Russian military has not commented on the incident. They stated, however, that 81 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight in five Russian regions without any casualties reported.
The drone strikes are part of a larger offensive that has intensified since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with numerous civilian buildings coming under fire. Hryhorov condemned the attack, labeling it a deliberate targeting of civilians. The loss of an entire family is a tragedy that we will never forget or forgive, he declared.
In the aftermath, Ukraine's state emergencies service reported two residential buildings partially destroyed and shared photos of firefighters tackling the fires resulting from the drone attack.
As the assault escalates, Ukraine is urging its Western partners for advanced air defense systems to combat Russia's regular drone fleet. In the meantime, Kyiv is also requesting long-range missiles to enhance its offensive capabilities, particularly targeting major Russian cities to weaken their military-industrial base.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently announced a €2 billion investment in drones for Ukraine, aiming to bolster their defense capabilities further. President Donald Trump has expressed support for peace efforts, though recent dialogues have not yielded a ceasefire agreement from the Russian side, which continues to affect civilians dramatically in the conflict.
