Ecuador's Security Forces Capture Notorious Gang Leader “Fito” Amid Escalating Violence
The apprehension of José Adolfo Macías, leader of Los Choneros, marks a significant breakthrough in Ecuador's fight against organized crime, as he is set for extradition to the U.S.
Ecuadorian security forces announced the capture of José Adolfo Macías, commonly known as "Fito," a significant figure in organized crime whose prison escape last year triggered a wave of violence throughout the country. President Daniel Noboa celebrated the arrest via social media, confirming that steps were being taken for Macías' extradition to the United States, where he faces serious charges related to drug trafficking and arms smuggling.
Macías, aged 45, is the notorious leader of Los Choneros, one of Ecuador's most violent criminal gangs. Earlier this year, the U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of New York charged him with multiple counts, including the distribution of cocaine. His prison escape in January 2024 occurred when officials sent to transfer him to a maximum-security facility discovered he was missing from his cell. This incident led the government to declare a state of emergency, resulting in prison riots, intensified gang violence, kidnappings, and bombings throughout Ecuador.
On Wednesday, authorities located Macías hiding in an underground bunker in Manta, roughly 120 miles from Guayaquil. Interior Minister John Reimberg detailed the operation, which involved collaboration between Ecuadorean forces and police. Footage released showed Macías being taken into custody, handcuffed and shirtless, before being transported to Guayaquil on a military aircraft.
The timing of Macías' escape was critical, occurring shortly after President Noboa assumed office. His election campaign had emphasized a strong stance against gang violence, leading him to declare, “More will fall, we will reclaim the country. No truce.” In recognition of the operation's success, the U.S. Embassy in Quito congratulated local authorities for their efforts in apprehending the gang leader.
