Heavy rainfall leads to loss of life and infrastructure damage in India’s tech hub.
Bengaluru, often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley, is grappling with severe flooding after experiencing unprecedented rainfall. Authorities have issued alerts as the region prepares for additional monsoon showers driven by cyclonic activity over the Andaman Sea. On Monday alone, over 100mm of rain fell in certain parts of the city, marking the highest levels recorded since 2011 and catalyzing tragic incidents, including the deaths of three individuals, one of whom was a 12-year-old boy.
With many of its renowned technology firms asking staff to work remotely due to hazardous road conditions, the impact of the flooding is widespread. On Monday, properties were damaged, including the tragic collapse of the compound wall at the i-Zed software firm, which resulted in the death of a 35-year-old employee. Videos circulating online portrayed commuters slogging through knee-deep water while vehicles parked in inundated streets stood motionless.
Efforts are underway by the city corporation to address the flooding situation, particularly in 210 identified vulnerable areas. Local authorities reassured citizens that their safety is a priority. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emphasized that public concern is unwarranted, despite the widespread chaos.
Political tensions have risen, with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the ruling Congress party of negligence regarding the city's infrastructure, despite significant monetary investment. The BJP has called for an emergency allocation of ₹10 billion (approximately $117 million) to facilitate relief efforts. Responding to these criticisms, Shivakumar pointed out that the urban challenges Bengaluru faces are longstanding issues neglected over various administrations.
Expert analyses suggest that the recurrent flooding is exacerbated by rapid urbanization encroaching on wetlands and lakes, coupled with inadequate city planning. Public outcry on social media platforms reflects growing frustration over the city’s dilapidated infrastructure and the continuous threat of flooding.
