Air India Completes Inspections Following Boeing Crash, Reports No Issues
Air India announced thorough inspections of its Boeing fleet's fuel switch mechanisms after a fatal crash, affirming no problems were detected.
In the aftermath of a shocking Air India crash last month that resulted in 260 fatalities, including 19 on the ground, the airline has conducted thorough inspections of its Boeing aircraft fleet, specifically focusing on the locking mechanisms of fuel switches. These mechanisms came under scrutiny after an Air India Boeing 787-8 jet went down shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad while en route to London.
The initial investigation, led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, revealed that the aircraft's fuel control switches transitioned from the "RUN" to the "CUTOFF" position moments before the aircraft began to descend. Safety analysts suggested that moving these switches may have required human intervention, as the design includes safeguards to prevent unintentional adjustments.
In response to the crash on June 12, aviation regulators mandated that all Indian airlines inspect fuel switches on their Boeing planes. Air India reported on Tuesday that it has completed those precautionary checks and found no problems with the locking mechanisms during the inspections.
Audio from the flight’s cockpit revealed moments of confusion, with one pilot questioning why the other had cut off the fuel. Despite their attempts to restore power approximately 10 seconds after the fuel supply was interrupted, the aircraft was unable to recover in time, leading to its unfortunate descent.
The investigation into the definitive cause of this tragic accident is expected to take an extended period, as officials continue to analyze data and gather insights from various sources to ascertain the underlying factors that led to this disaster.
