Europe's Independence Moment

In a passionate plea to EU lawmakers, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared that Europe is currently embroiled in a series of battles against threats posed by Russia, global trade challenges, and rival powers, stressing the need for Europe to claim its independence.

During her State of the Union address in Strasbourg, France, von der Leyen outlined new measures to support Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. The President emphasized the urgent need for trade restrictions and sanctions against Israel in response to the war in Gaza.

Championing Values and Democracy

“Europe is in a fight for our values and our democracies,” von der Leyen said. “A fight for our liberty and our ability to determine our destiny for ourselves.” She underscored that the current moment is crucial for Europe to assert its independence, especially as international dynamics shift.

Highlighting the necessity for continued support for Ukraine, von der Leyen remarked that Russian President Vladimir Putin shows no inclination to end the war, calling for enhanced sanctions and efforts to pressure Russia into negotiations.

Support for Ukraine's Economy

To address Ukraine's economic challenges, von der Leyen discussed plans to utilize frozen Russian assets, estimated at 200 billion euros, to bolster Ukraine’s war-torn economy. A reparations loan is also being considered to compensate for the extensive damage inflicted by Russian aggression.

Gaza Conflict Concerns

Turning her attention to the Gaza conflict, she proposed freezing certain financial support to Israel and imposing sanctions, noting that the humanitarian crisis has shaken global conscience.

Dealing with Global Trade Relations

Commenting on the controversial tariff deal with the United States, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong economic relationship with the U.S., which is vital for European jobs and livelihoods. ”Millions of jobs depend on this relationship,” she stated.
