At least 20 people, including five journalists working for the international media, have been killed in an Israeli double strike on Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, the territory's Hamas-run health ministry reports.

The journalists had worked with major outlets including Reuters, AP, Al Jazeera, and Middle East Eye. Four health workers were also reported lost in this deadly attack.

Footage from the scene captured the moment a second strike hit rescue workers who were responding to the first attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the incident a tragic mishap and stated that military authorities are conducting a comprehensive investigation.

The surge in deaths brings the total number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023 to nearly 200. The Committee to Protect Journalists has labeled this conflict as the deadliest for journalists in recorded history.

Following the attack, UN officials have called for independent investigations and a ceasefire, underlining the extreme dangers faced by medical personnel and journalists in conflict areas.

As the crisis continues, the health ministry in Gaza reported additional casualties related to hunger and malnutrition, reflecting the ongoing humanitarian crisis while calls for international response grow louder.
