Deadly Waves Claim Lives Along Australia’s East Coast
Six fatalities reported as swells exceed 24 feet during hazardous surf conditions over the Easter weekend.
At least six people tragically lost their lives as colossal waves lashed the east coast of Australia, particularly around Sydney, over the Easter holiday weekend. The fatal incidents occurred as a low-pressure system generated massive swells, with waves exceeding 24 feet recorded off Brisbane's coast, according to government data.
On Friday, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued a hazardous surf warning that affected a long stretch of coastline from Queensland to New South Wales, including popular areas such as Sydney, Byron Bay, and the Gold Coast. Officials advised against activities like rock fishing, swimming, and boating due to the treacherous conditions.
As the warnings persisted throughout the weekend, authorities confirmed the deaths of five individuals in New South Wales and one in Victoria. Most victims were men engaged in fishing or walking on rocks when they were swept into the tumultuous ocean. One such incident involved a fisherman in Wattamolla, located about 20 miles south of Sydney, who drowned while a 14-year-old boy he was with was rescued and hospitalized.
New South Wales police reported that another man who was also swept into the ocean while walking on rocks at Little Bay Beach remained missing. Tragically, since Friday, the area's drowning toll has risen, with concerns heightened as local authorities continue to search for missing individuals.
In Victoria, a woman tragically lost her life after being swept off rocks in San Remo on Friday, while another man and woman were caught in similar circumstances. The woman managed to reach safety, but the man remains unaccounted for.
According to Royal Life Saving Australia, drownings are a significant issue, with 128 individuals reported to have drowned in New South Wales in 2024 alone. Almost half of these incidents occurred along the coastline, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and safety measures during adverse weather conditions.
As the search for missing persons continues, the recent series of tragic events serves as a somber reminder of nature's unpredictability and the critical importance of adhering to safety warnings during extreme weather.
