One of the most famous stamps features a soldier giving the middle finger to a Russian warship, a nod to the defiant stand taken by Ukrainian forces on the first day of the invasion nearly three years ago. This came in response to a demand for surrender, and while the profanity may be unprintable, the stamp quickly gained iconic status, with its limited release selling out in just a week. Following this success, the remaining stocks were presented to international delegations representing Ukraine.
Ihor Smilyansky, the head of Ukrposhta, stands firm in his decision to take risks with their stamp designs. "I don't care whatever everyone else thinks. I just believe it's the right thing to do," he stated in an interview. By embracing unconventional themes and designs, the postal service seeks to uplift spirits during a challenging time, with public engagement influencing design choices.
Another popular stamp features a Ukrainian tractor towing away a captured Russian tank, accompanied by the widely recognized greeting: "Good evening, we're from Ukraine." Approximately eight million of these stamps have been sold, further underscoring the public's embrace of such creative expressions during a time of war.
In another initiative, stamps featuring the beloved mine-sniffing dog, Patron, have raised significant funds, aiding mine-clearing operations and supporting local shelters. Additionally, a stamp depicting a mural by renowned street artist Banksy, which emerged from the tragic destruction surrounding Kyiv, helped finance the construction of bomb shelters.
