At least three people have been killed and more than 30 injured in a 'massive' overnight Russian aerial attack on Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky says.
He reports that regions across the country were targeted as part of a 'deliberate strategy' to intimidate civilians and destroy infrastructure, with one direct missile hitting a residential building.
Ukraine's air force stated that Moscow launched 619 drones and missiles during this attack. Meanwhile, Russia's defense ministry described the 'massive strike' as targeting military-industrial facilities using 'precision weapons'.
In a separate incident, Russia reported that four people were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on the Samara region, which Kyiv claims hit a significant oil refinery there.
Ukrainian authorities noted damage to another oil refinery in the Saratov region, intensifying the conflict's economic implications.
In a post on social media, President Zelensky identified attacks in Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Kyiv, Odesa, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions. He detailed a troubling missile hit on a high-rise residential building in Dnipro, stating civilian properties were also targeted.
Footage verified by the BBC revealed a missile in flight and the impact, along with images of the damaged Dnipro building.
In Russia, the Samara regional Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev reported that four individuals were killed by enemy drones.
Ukraine's military confirmed its drones hit the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery in the Samara region as well as the Saratov oil refinery in neighboring areas.
Cross-border drone raids have become increasingly prominent in the ongoing war, with Ukraine actively targeting Russian core industrial facilities critical to the war effort.
In recent weeks, Moscow has intensified its assaults, while Kyiv and its Western allies, including the U.S., are advocating for a ceasefire. Earlier, the Ukrainian capital experienced an attack from a Russian Iskander cruise missile.
President Zelensky is set to discuss the situation with U.S. President Donald Trump at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The latest attack follows increasing tensions with NATO members, as both Poland and Romania reported near-violations of their airspace by Russian drones.
