In brief

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has announced an external investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, who has faced accusers amid his significant role in pursuing war crimes against Israeli and Hamas leaders.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has taken significant steps in response to allegations of sexual misconduct against its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan. On Monday, the court announced it would initiate an independent investigation into the accusations, emphasizing the need for an external body to ensure a proper and impartial inquiry. This decision follows allegations that Mr. Khan, who is known for seeking arrest warrants for high-ranking officials amid the Gaza conflict, was involved in harassment, a claim he has denied vehemently. In an official statement, Paivi Kaukoranta, chair of the ICC's governing assembly, revealed that the investigation is designed to create a fair process to assess the claims against Khan. Khan acknowledged the investigation and requested that his deputies manage the internal handling of the matter, expressing a willingness to cooperate. Reports surfaced earlier this year, detailing allegations made by a female colleague, which led to discussions on how the court could address the claims. In October, following preliminary inquiries, Kaukoranta indicated that the court would typically seek consent from any alleged victim prior to moving forward with investigations; however, a subsequent conversation with the accuser prevented them from doing so at that time. Mr. Khan later suggested that the allegations had been dismissed, asserting that the matter was considered "closed" due to a lack of formal complaints. This unfolding situation raises important questions about institutional accountability within international legal frameworks and the handling of misconduct allegations against high-ranking officials. The outcome of this independent investigation could significantly impact not only Khan's position but also the credibility of the ICC as an institution dedicated to justice and accountability on the global stage.
