In brief

In an unexpected diplomatic turn, representatives from India and China convened at the 16th annual BRICS summit, igniting discussions on enhancing relations that have been strained in recent years.

Kazan, Russia - In a pivotal moment for geopolitical relations in Asia, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met for their first formal discussions in over five years amidst the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. This meeting comes only two days after the two nations brokered a deal to collaboratively patrol their contentious Himalayan border, an area that has historically been a flashpoint for conflict, particularly highlighted by a deadly 2020 clash. The BRICS summit, which has become a major platform for emerging markets, includes a diverse array of member states: initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, it has recently expanded to welcome Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. This grouping now represents nearly half of the global population and serves as a crucial counterbalance to Western-dominated forums like the G7.Despite aspirations to elevate the status of the Global South, conflicts of interest among member states, particularly between India and China—two key players—remain a challenge. While China seeks to leverage the BRICS platform to diminish U.S. influence and assert its leadership within the Global South, India’s positioning is more cautious, emphasizing the need for the BRICS to avoid an explicitly anti-Western stance.During discussions at the summit, leaders also explored alternative financial systems independent of the U.S. dollar, echoing calls for economic diversification. Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested the establishment of a BRICS grain exchange, which would build on Russia’s status as a leading wheat exporter. Such an initiative aims to stabilize commodity prices that rose significantly following disruptions tied to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. As these leaders navigate complex geopolitical landscapes, the outcomes of their interactions at the BRICS summit could lead to new alliances and innovative solutions to pressing global issues.
