In brief
Recent reports from UNICEF indicate a disturbing rise in sexual violence against children in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where armed conflicts have escalated due to ethnic disputes and resource competition. Over 170 instances of child rape were recorded in just one week, amidst ongoing battles involving rebel groups.
Sexual violence against children in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has reached alarming levels, according to a recent report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This surge is attributed to ongoing conflicts, intensified by ethnic tensions and disputes over land and mineral resources. Between January 27 and February 2, health care facilities in Goma recorded 170 cases of child rape in a single week, a significant increase from the average of 95 cases in preceding weeks, stated Lianne Gutcher, UNICEF’s communication lead in Congo.Similar reports from the organization Save the Children reflect the tragic trend of increased violence against minors across eastern Congo. Armed groups, notably the M23 rebels suspected of Rwandan backing, have gained ground rapidly, displacing over half a million people and seizing key territories. Goma, the city of three million near the Rwandan border, fell to these rebels in a matter of weeks.Catherine Russell, UNICEF’s executive director, highlighted the grave violations committed against children, underscoring the widespread and severe nature of the violence. Medical facilities report shortages of medications used to manage HIV risks for survivors, raising concerns about the healthcare system's capacity to respond. In parallel, Save the Children has documented tragic cases, including the systematic rape of six sisters aged as young as twelve, and the distressing murder of a 16-year-old girl resisting armed assailants in South Kivu Province. Rebel leaders assert they are working to establish order and security within their controlled regions; however, the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate.Reports from frontline workers paint a harrowing picture of the reality faced by children in the regions plagued by violence. The conflict not only endangers lives but also raises urgent calls for international action and humanitarian support to shield vulnerable populations from further harm.
