In brief

Kenya's only L.G.B.T.Q. church has faced relentless challenges but remains a beacon of hope for marginalized communities.

For almost a decade, the L.G.B.T.Q. community in Nairobi has witnessed the survival of a unique underground church, continuously relocating to escape persecution. Facing vandalism, police intervention, and violent opposition, this congregation has moved through ten different locations over the years. Despite these challenges, each Sunday, around 100 congregants gather in a heavily guarded, undisclosed space—celebrating their faith and identities in a society that often rejects them.On a recent Sunday, the atmosphere was charged with emotion as Pastor Caroline Omolo delivered a powerful message to her flock, many of whom have fled neighboring countries where their existence is under constant threat. "Family may reject you, and your former church may not understand you," she preached, resonating deeply with her audience. The congregation responded with enthusiastic affirmations, embodying a spirit of resilience that has become characteristic of their community. This gathering stands out not just as a religious service but as a crucial lifeline for many who have suffered due to their sexual and gender identities. The church provides a sanctuary where members can embrace both their faith and their true selves, creating a unique space that fosters belonging in a world that often feels hostile. Over the past decade, the love and support from this underground church continue to grow, reflecting the unwavering determination of its members to find hope and solace in their shared faith.
