In brief
Recent bombings have devastated Yemen's critical airport facilities, exacerbating humanitarian challenges faced by millions in Houthi-controlled regions.
Israeli warplanes have carried out another bombing of Yemen's main international airport, in a military response to missile attacks launched by the Iran-aligned Houthi militia. This latest strike, occurring on Wednesday, follows an earlier significant airstrike on the same site earlier this month, which had already halted operations for over a week. Israeli officials claimed that the attack destroyed the last aircraft in operation for the Houthi government at Sana's airport.Khaled al-Shaief, the airport's director, lamented the complete destruction of the aircraft, sharing visuals on social media of the burning wreckage as emergency responders tried to contain the flames. Sana airport is crucial for over 20 million residents in the Houthi-held territories, serving as a vital channel for essential medical access, treatment, and humanitarian aid.Since October 2023, the Houthis have launched missile and drone attacks against Israel as part of a declared gesture of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Both the Houthi movement and Hamas are supported by Iran, forming a network of proxy forces in the broader Middle East conflict. Air raid sirens were activated multiple times across Israel earlier this week, though the Israeli military reported successfully intercepting all incoming Houthi missiles.
