In brief

Eight workers remain unaccounted for after a tunnel collapse in Telangana, following concerns raised by environmental activists regarding the project’s safety. Despite extensive rescue operations, the situation remains dire.

Rescue efforts are underway for eight workers who are believed to be trapped in a collapsed tunnel in Telangana, India, following a disaster that occurred over the weekend. A sudden influx of silt and water led to a ceiling collapse in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel, a major irrigation project that has been fraught with delays since its inception in 2005. The incident occurred roughly nine miles into the tunnel when the roof gave way, burying the workers behind a tunnel-boring machine that obstructed their route to safety.Manoj Gaur, chairman of Jaiprakash Associates, the company overseeing the project, described the chaotic conditions, saying, “Water gushed in and the roof caved in.” The tunnel's considerable size added to the challenge, with reports indicating that significant portions were filled with debris and water. Local officials have not managed to establish communication with the trapped workers, raising fears about their condition. As the search continues, nine agencies—including the Indian Army and Marine Commandos, who have recent experience in tunnel rescues—are engaged in operations to free the individuals. However, Telangana state minister Jupally Krishna Rao expressed concern over the likelihood of finding the workers alive, stating, “The chances are not very good, but even if there is the slightest chance, we will try to save them.”Environmental advocates have criticized the construction of this multibillion-dollar project, asserting that it has destabilized the mountainous region and contributed to the landslide that precipitated this tragedy. Efforts to clear the tunnel are being hampered by significant debris, with reports of silt buildup reaching six to seven feet in certain areas. As rescue teams strive to reach the trapped workers, the situation remains critical and the outcome uncertain.
