In brief

Amid escalating military tensions, Israel has expanded its operations in Tehran, prompting evacuation orders impacting the city's substantial population. As residents flee, concerns grow over the military targets within densely populated areas.

With a population nearing 10 million packed into about 300 square miles, Tehran's density rivals that of New York City, according to the C.I.A. World Factbook. Approximately one in every ten Iranians resides within the city's limits, with even more in the surrounding metropolitan areas. In recent days, vivid images and videos from the capital depict long queues at gas stations and severe traffic congestion as residents attempt to evacuate amidst rising alarm. The urgency escalated on Monday night when the Israeli military announced an evacuation order for an area in District 3, which is one of the most densely populated upscale neighborhoods, housing several hundred thousand residents. Shortly thereafter, President Donald J. Trump echoed the warnings on Truth Social, advising the entire population of Tehran to "immediately evacuate."Just a day after these orders, the Israeli military warned residents to vacate part of District 18, home to one of Tehran’s poorest neighborhoods near Mehrabad International Airport. Their operations have reportedly focused on military and critical infrastructure aimed at hindering Iran's nuclear capabilities. This campaign contributed to verified strikes in populated urban areas like Tabriz and Mashhad and more isolated locations, including Natanz, the site of Iran's principal uranium enrichment facility. The unfolding situation underscores the potential human cost of military actions taking place in one of the world’s most densely populated regions, raising urgent questions about the safety of civilians amidst warfare.
