In brief
Four Democratic Representatives have landed in El Salvador to focus on the unlawful deportation case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, an American resident wrongfully sent back to his country of birth.
In a significant political move, four Democratic lawmakers have arrived in El Salvador to campaign for the release of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was unjustly deported. Representatives Robert Garcia (California), Maxwell Alejandro Frost (Florida), Yassamin Ansari (Arizona), and Maxine E. Dexter (Oregon) initiated their visit following a previous trip by Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, who succeeded in securing a meeting with Mr. Abrego Garcia. The lawmakers aim to shine a light on the controversial handling of deportations during the Trump administration, emphasizing the callousness with which immigrants' rights have been managed. “While Donald Trump continues to defy the Supreme Court, Kilmar Abrego Garcia is being held illegally in El Salvador after being wrongfully deported,” Representative Garcia stated, condemning the administration's actions. He insisted that the U.S. must uphold due process and respect the rights of immigrants.Mr. Abrego Garcia, originally hailing from El Salvador, resided in Maryland with his family when he was detained and subsequently deported alongside over 200 individuals alleged to have gang affiliations. Despite having entered the U.S. illegally, a judge had previously prohibited his deportation due to concerns for his safety back home. Following his March deportation, a federal judge mandated his return to the U.S., a decision reinforced by the Supreme Court. The Trump administration initially acknowledged the error in Mr. Abrego Garcia's deportation but later maintained that the procedure was appropriate. As of now, administration officials assert he is no longer in U.S. custody, placing the onus on Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to facilitate his return.Recently, it has been noted that Mr. Abrego Garcia was transferred from a facility known for high-security inmates to another detention center in Santa Ana, El Salvador. The visiting lawmakers have plans to engage with U.S. Embassy officials and human rights organizations in San Salvador. They aim not only to advocate for Mr. Abrego Garcia but also to assess the broader implications of U.S. deportations on individuals currently detained in El Salvador.
