In brief

Fire crews are working round the clock to manage a blaze that has left over 16,000 homes in darkness and caused operational disruptions at one of the world's busiest airports.

The London Fire Brigade reported that the incident began late Thursday evening at the North Hyde substation, situated just two miles from Heathrow. By 4 a.m. on Friday, firefighters had been battling the flames for hours, with a transformer continuing to burn. Crews, numbering around 70, have set up a perimeter to ensure safety as thick smoke billowed from the scene. “This will be a prolonged incident,” warned Pat Goulbourne, assistant commissioner of the fire brigade, emphasizing that the situation would worsen as morning approached. As a precaution, around 150 local residents were evacuated from the area. Authorities have implemented a cordon that extends 650 feet around the substation, restricting access to the public while fire crews work diligently to subdue the fire. Currently, there are no known details regarding the cause of this fire, and investigations will be necessary once the situation is under control. The power outage has affected approximately 16,000 homes around Heathrow, as the electrical supply chain struggles to recover from this unforeseen event. The regional utility, Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, is assessing the damage and working to restore power as quickly as conditions allow. Disruptions at Heathrow Airport are expected to extend into Friday, and travelers have been urged to check with their airlines for updates on flight status. The incident serves as yet another reminder of the potential vulnerabilities within our infrastructure, particularly as extreme weather events become more frequent due to climate change.
